As a Volunteer Befriender you will help improve the quality of life for older people in our care home. Our befrienders are introduced to an older person with the purpose of them spending an hour or two each visit to bring friendship, company, and a chance to chat.

What are the benefits of becoming a volunteer?

Befriending can help reduce feelings of social isolation and loneliness, improve mental and physical health, increase confidence and self-esteem, and enhance the quality of life of older people.  You can also enrich your own life with new experiences and friendships. You will also gain valuable skills and knowledge that can enhance your personal and professional development.

How much time do I need to commit as a volunteer?

The time commitment varies depending on the needs of the MHA location you are matched with and your availability. Generally, MHA asks for a minimum of two hours per week for at least six months.

What kind of support will I receive as a volunteer?

You will receive ongoing support and guidance from the staff  who will introduce you to an older person, monitor your progress, and provide feedback. You will also have access to online resources, training opportunities, and peer support from other volunteers.
