A Shefford care home has come up with a creative way to keep residents cool during the hot weather — by turning a wheelchair and walker into an ice cream van.

MHA Oak Manor purchased an ice cream tent and adapted it to create the front of the van. Two members of staff then take turns pushing it around the home, serving residents ice creams with sauces and sprinkles.

The van also plays familiar ice cream van jingles, bringing back memories for residents, particularly those living with dementia.

Cecilia Adamek, home manager, said the idea came after seeing creative videos on social media.

“We wanted to make sure we kept our residents cool, but also do it in a fun way,” she said.

The idea has been well received by residents, visitors and families, with the home also receiving positive feedback after sharing photographs on Facebook.
