104-year-old resident at MHA Ryelands inspires area manager to go the extra mile

A resident at MHA Lauriston in Hastings has celebrated 60 years of marriage, marking his diamond wedding anniversary with a surprise celebration organised by care home staff.

Bob Waghorne, who moved into the home in May, celebrated the milestone with his wife Ann, surrounded by family and staff. The couple first met in 1963 and married a few years later. They have two children, Gary and Julie.

Reflecting on their long marriage, Bob humorously revealed the secret to their success: “She’s the boss.”

Before retiring, Bob served in the Royal Engineers as part of his national service, later working as a cleaner and fireman on steam trains. He and Ann previously lived in Sidley before Bob moved to Lauriston.

To mark the special day, staff at MHA Lauriston arranged a surprise celebration with flowers, a handmade cake from the kitchen team, and thoughtful gifts—including a framed collection of photos from their earlier years, arranged with help from their daughter.
