Selina O’Loughlin, a care assistant at MHA The Herons, has marked Black History Month by sharing special sentimental items that reflect her Jamaican heritage, sparking a meaningful conversation about culture and history with residents at the home.

With English, Irish, and Jamaican roots, Selina proudly brought in a Jamaican flag, a handmade doll she received from Jamaica over 30 years ago, and a Jamaican top gifted by her uncle, who visits the island annually. These items provided a unique window into her background, prompting residents to ask questions about Jamaican culture, cuisine, and traditions.

MHA The Herons, a residential care home serving 39 residents, encourages staff and residents alike to share their diverse experiences. Selina’s session, organized in collaboration with Mandy, the home’s activities coordinator, highlighted the importance of celebrating Black History Month and embracing cultural identity.
