A Wolverhampton centenarian has celebrated his 100th birthday in style, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow residents — and he puts his long life down to an unexpected daily ritual: whisky in his tea.

Clarence “Cal” Hoggins, who lives at MHA Waterside House, marked his milestone birthday with around 25 family members, including sisters who travelled from Southampton and Southport. Staff transformed the home’s entertainment and café area for the occasion, with live music from an Elvis tribute act and no fewer than three homemade birthday cakes.

Born in Wolverhampton, Cal began his working life as a cobbler before serving six years in Egypt with the Royal Air Force. He later worked as a supervisor and foreman in the steel industry. He married his late wife Monica — affectionately known as Trixie — and the couple enjoyed 67 years together. They have two sons, Phil and Peter.
