Compassionate end of life care

We’re dedicated to providing exceptional, compassionate care, throughout all our residents’ time with us, including until the very end, however long this may be.

Supporting you and your loved one through end of life care

Our approach to end of life or palliative care is encapsulated in our Final Lap training programme. This course is taken by all colleagues across MHA and aims to ensure all our care homes are comforting places where death and dying are faced openly and sensitively with residents and their families.

All care home residents, of all faiths and none, have the opportunity to spend time with the home’s chaplain. During your time in an MHA care home, the chaplain and the care staff will get to know you as a person, understanding what’s important to you in life and what comforts you.

Respectful conversations

Open and sensitive conversations helps us stay aware of anything particularly special to you, including for example:

  • Favourite pieces of music
  • How you would like to be cared for
  • What plans you want to make.

This includes choices about medical care; who you would want to make decisions for you if you’re unable to; things that might brighten your day; what religious care you may want or how you would like your funeral to be conducted.

Residents are encouraged to involve their family and friends when making these important decisions. Many friends and relatives of residents keep in close contact with our care homes long after their loved ones have died, recognising the compassionate care and support that our care teams provided during the later stages of life.

Chaplaincy & spiritual support

Our chaplains can provide spiritual care for people of any faith or belief if requested and can often arrange for other faith leaders to visit if appropriate. The chaplain may be able to conduct the funeral at the family’s request so that you have the comfort of knowing that the service will be personal to your loved one and there will be a friendly face there that the family knows.
