Our approach to environmental, social & governance (ESG)

At MHA, doing the right thing is part of who we are - not just for those we care for and support today, but for generations to come. That’s why we’re embedding a clear, meaningful approach to environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities right across the organisation.

Designing for a greener future

Sustainability isn’t just about buildings - it’s about how we operate every day. We’re actively reviewing our procurement processes to favour suppliers and partners who align with our values and environmental commitments. From smarter energy use to more sustainable materials, we’re embedding green thinking across the board.

A dedicated ESG strategy is also being developed throughout 2025. This will set out measurable goals for energy efficiency and environmental performance, with progress tracking starting in 2026. These plans are being embedded not just in care and housing, but in finance, facilities and digital infrastructure too.

Keeping governance strong and transparent

Trust matters - to residents, members, relatives, colleagues, volunteer, funders and partners. That’s why our governance structures are rooted in openness, fairness and alignment with our values: respect, nurture and inspire.

We’ve enhanced our governance frameworks to strengthen compliance, improve assurance and support clear, ethical decision-making. We’re also introducing new systems that make data more accessible and performance indicators easier to track - from care outcomes to environmental progress.

Digital innovation plays a big part in this. Our rollout of new systems - from billing and reporting to digital support plans - is helping us simplify operations, increase transparency and respond more effectively to the needs of those we support.

All of this sits within our wider strategy to make MHA more resilient, efficient and purpose-driven for the long term.

Powered by people and inclusion

Our 2,500 volunteers are a vital part of the MHA family. They bring energy, companionship and warmth into the lives of the people we support. Through intergenerational activities and local partnerships, we’re building bridges between people of all ages and backgrounds.

We’re also committed to nurturing an inclusive, supportive culture across all our teams. That includes tracking equity and diversity, supporting mental health and wellbeing, and investing in leadership development so everyone at MHA can feel valued and empowered.
